• Allium: we grow decorative onions at the dacha

Growing Allium and caring for it

The optimal time for planting Allium is autumn or spring, which depends on the type and variety of decorative onions. For example, early-flowering varieties are best planted in September, so that the bulbs take root by the beginning of spring or successfully bloom by summer. The late-flowered varieties of Allium should be planted closer to May.

When planting Allium, it is necessary to monitor the planting depth: for a whole bulb, the embedding depth is about two bulb diameters, and the distance between seedlings is about 0.5 m. In addition, when planting, the height of the bulb must be taken into account. Tall varieties better planted into the depths of the flower garden, while short Allium usually placed in the foreground flower beds.

Within 4-5 years allium can grow without transplants. Peduncle Allium begins to grow in early spring, immediately after the appearance of the belt-like or linear leaves. For leaves and peduncle plants characterized by a pronounced garlic-onion odor. Immediately before flowering allium leaves begin to die. They should not be cut off, they should fall off in a natural way, because before the very beginning of the process they supply the bulb with nutrients.

If the yellowing onion leaves spoil the appearance of the flower bed, you can plant other ornamental and flowering plants alongside, which will hide the unsightly features of allium leaves. Decorative onion goes well with plants that have a similar period of growth and flowering. These are peonies, iris, poppy, lupine and some others. Large varieties of Allium can be planted randomly, due to which they will focus on themselves throughout the flower garden. Small-color varieties are better to plant in a small group, decorating a separate section of the flower garden.

In the process of vegetation, allium actually does not require watering. It blooms for about two months and then retires. The bulbs of the plant accumulate nutrients in the ground, so it is recommended to loosen the soil and fertilize with potash fertilizers.Decorative bow tolerates drought and can winter without shelter. It is worth noting that it is often affected by thrips and other pests of onion and garlic.

    Multiplication of allium

The plant is able to multiply by bulbs, bulbs or seeds. During transplantation in the autumn, it is enough to divide overgrown bulbs and plant them at a distance from each other. There should be enough space for each future plant, since transplantation takes place about once every 4-5 years.

You can choose the breeding of decorative onion seeds. To get a good seed, it is better to pre-seed the seeds in natural conditions, using the first, largest and already flowering inflorescences. However, it is worth remembering that during seed reproduction plants can have a pale color of flowers.

In the case of seed propagation of a decorative onion, a small bed in the ground should be allocated for it. In the first year, the bulbs growing from seeds practically do not exceed the size of the nail, resembling the sprouts of a common onion. Flowering seedlings from seeds occurs after the bulbs reach a productive size, that is, not earlier than in 3-5 years.

If there are a small number of decorative onion bulbs, they can be multiplied fairly quickly by the method of bulbs. To do this, cut off the withered plant heads and process them with growth stimulants. In the future, planting is the same as in the case of seeds. In the future, maternal attributes such as height and color saturation are fully transferred to new plants.
