How MS Has Helped Me Perfect the Irish Goodbye
Wasn’t He Here a Minute Ago?
The “Irish goodbye,” as it is known, is actually a survival mechanism developed out of necessity by event-goers who don’t want to attract attention and be obliged to give prolonged excuses of why they are leaving so early … and without a cuppa, cake, and something to take with them. (Even getting an Irish person off the phone is nearly impossible!)
The Irish goodbye starts with a quick glance toward the door after meeting a partner’s eye or some other prearranged signal. Slowly, stealthily, you make your way toward the door, hoping no one will recognize you’re making a Celtic exit.
It’s not out of disrespect to hosts or guests; one just doesn’t want to spend the next three-quarters of an hour leaving.
It’s Time to Leave — Now!
It has been interesting to see others perform what I now know as “the Irish goodbye” when I’ve always thought of it as “the MS exit.”
For years I’ve situated myself near the door at parties. Caryn and I have an unobtrusive signal that can be seen across a room to indicate it’s time to go.
