How to Build an Egg Drop Project
This project can be used by science students of various ages to complete a science fair project. These directions can be used to carry out directions and record results in a scientific fashion with accuracy to successfully complete an egg drop project.
Collect all of the materials listed below that you will need for the project.
Choose a location to drop your egg.It is recommended to use a stairwell where you can drop the egg chamber from at least the height of 12 feet (3.7 m).
Establish your hypothesis of whether you think your created chamber will keep the egg safe from cracking once it is dropped.
Open the shoe box and pad all sides of the box with facial tissues and cotton balls.Tape or glue may be used to keep the materials in place.
Open the egg carton lid and remove two eggs from the bottom carrier tray. Cut the bottom of the egg carton the carton where the two eggs once were held. Dispose of or cook one of the eggs. Place the 2 bottom tray 'cups'- one on top of and one the bottom of the second egg and tape shut.
Place 'cartoned' egg in the padded egg chamber. Seal the box shut with tape on all four sides.
Hold box at the top of the stairs and ask a friend to time and signal you to go.Have the friend record the amount of time it takes for the egg to hit the floor.
Open box and check to see if the egg is broken.
Repeat the experiment 2 more times. Record all results.
Buy a presentation board and creatively display your experiment. Make sure to include all of the steps of the Scientific Method (Problem, Hypothesis, Materials, Procedure, Observations, and Results). Include pictures of you completing the project on your board.
QuestionWhat if we don't have a shoe box?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerYou could use sponges. When my kid was in 6th grade they did this; he had 2 sponges, had the egg inside and he wrapped it with runner bands. He came in 1st place! Thanks!
- Buy a trifold presentation board
- Use color pictures
- Create a digital graph online to compare all three trials of the experiment
- Conduct experiment in a well lit area
- Before dropping the experiment make sure that no one is walking in the area you will drop the egg.*Wear gloves while handling the egg, so in case egg cracks you are not exposed to the raw egg contents. *Do not conduct the experiment if you are allergic to eggs.
