    How to create an archive?

File archiving is a fairly popular option that is used by users when files are to be sent by mail or when they are not placed on any storage media in uncompressed format. This article will tell you how to create an archive.

    Archiving software

There are quite a few programs with which you can create archives, but the most popular and simple ones are 7-Zip and WinRAR. These programs can also create self-extracting archives, that is, those that combine the archive and the code to unpack it.

    Archive 7-Zip

The algorithm for creating an archive using the 7-Zip program is quite simple:

    1. Download the program 7-Zip and install it on your computer, following the prompts autoinstaller.
    2. Select the file / files that we want to add to the archive.
    3. Right-click on the selected area and select the item "7-Zip" in the drop-down menu.
    4. archiveYou will see the second drop-down menu in which you can select actions for unpacking and creating an archive. We are interested in creating an archive, and therefore select the item "Add to archive".
    5. In the window that appears, select the name of the archive and its format, set the unarchiving password (if you need to create an archive with a password) and the level of compression in the corresponding fields.
    6. After entering the necessary data, click "OK". All! Archive created.

    Archive with WinRAR

Using WinRAR, creating an archive is also easy:

    1. Download the program WinRAR and install it on your computer, followingArchive with WinRARauto installer hints.
    2. Select the file / files that we want to add to the archive.
    3. We right-click on the selected area and in the drop-down menu select the item "Add to archive ...".
    4. In the window that appears, select the name of the archive and its format (RAR or ZIP), set the unarchiving password (if you need to create an archive with a password) and the level of compression in the corresponding fields.
    5. After entering the necessary data, click "OK". Done!

    File splitting

In addition, WinRAR has an interesting function of splitting a file that is archived into several parts, and the size of the parts can be chosen. This is done using the parameter setting window (where the archive name, password, and other settings are specified) in the "Split into volumes by size ..." item. The partitioning function is very convenient when, for example, you need to move a 7 GB file somewhere, and you have two flash drives for 4 GB at your disposal.

Important point! Splitting a file into volumes is only possible in RAR format.

    ZIP or RAR?

Of course, if you need to split a file into parts, there should not be any dilemma - you need to archive the file in RAR format, but what format should you choose in the event that splitting into volumes is not required?

The main plus of ZIP is that the archive in this format is created faster and most operating systems can unzip ZIP without installing additional programs. However, RAR provides a higher compression ratio and, unlike ZIP, can work with files of more than 2 GB, and in addition, it has the ability to recover damaged files.

So, it is necessary to decide which archive to create, depending on the specific task facing the user.
