How Do I Fix My Dandruff?
How To Finally Beat Dandruff—And 4 More Annoying Hair Problems, Solved
Woke up to weird creases and seriously funky texture? No problem. The best way to fix your bed head is to re-wet those sections and hit them with a blow dryer (well, not literally "hit" because, ouch). “It has to do with the hydrogen bonds in the hair,” says James Corbett, owner of James Corbett Studio in New York City and the director of Clairol Color. “With water, we can change the shape of the hair by reforming those bonds.” Use a spray bottle to dampen unruly sections, then dry using a round brush (here's how to find the best brush for your hair type).
If you don’t have time to re-wet and dry, try Redken Pillow Proof Blow Dry Express Primer (, redken.com)—shake well, then lightly mist the spray along the lengths of dry hair, and follow with a flat iron.
Overly slick strands are a good-hair-day killer. So if you feel like your hair could usually use a little refreshing between washes, keep dry shampoo at the ready. Try Dove Refresh + Care Invigorating Dry Shampoo (, drugstore.com) or DryBar Detox Dry Shampoo (, ). If an oily scalp is a constant issue for you, go with Klorane Dry Shampoo with Nettle (, ), which has super absorbent nettle to eliminate excess sebum from your scalp. Remember to shake the can well before you spray, and use your fingers to rub the product in to avoid powdery-looking hair. In a pinch, you can also use talc powder to soak up unwelcome grease, says Corbett.
The fix for dandruff starts in the shower. “Look for shampoos and conditioners with the anti-dandruff ingredient pyrithione zinc, like Head & Shoulders Classic Clean (, drugstore.com),” says Corbett. “Make sure to use both the shampoo and conditioner together as a regimen—if you swap for a regular conditioner, you’ll remove the anti-dandruff ingredients you just deposited with the shampoo.” You can also try Avalon Organics Medicated Anti-Dandruff Shampoo (, ), which contains 2% salicylic acid to treat and prevent dandruff.
If you don’t have time to shower after you notice the flakes, Corbett recommends going with a zigzag part or pulling your hair back to make the flakes disappear into your part line. (Got roots, too? Here are 7 fast ways to hide 'em.)
Snipping a few split ends at home is tempting, but unless you happen to be a stylist, you should step away from the scissors. “My general rule of thumb with cutting your own hair at home is less is more,” says Corbett. But you don’t have to just suck it up and deal with split ends until you can get to the salon; there’s a whole category of products dedicated to temporarily putting split ends back together. Try Pantene Expert Advanced Keratin Repair Split End Fuser (, pantene.com), Pureology Strength Cure Split End Salve Treatment (, amazon.com), or Garnier Fructis Damage Eraser Split End Bandage (, amazon.com).
