Tools and materials
Before you make the countertop, you must prepare the following tools and materials:
- jigsaw designed for cutting tiles;
- tiled crosses (available at a hardware store);
- spatulas (60 x 12 cm);
- tile glue with increased fixation;
- foam sponges;
- moisture protective impregnation;
- PVA glue;
- liquid glass;
- self-tapping screws;
- electric jigsaw;
- drill with drills;
- brushes with natural nap;
- bucket and construction mixer (for mortar mixing);
- bitumen mastic;
- painting grid;
- masking tape;
- building level;
- cement mix;
- roulette wheel;
- plywood sheets (double layer);
Worktop making: process
The process of making your own tabletop consists of several stages, each of which is important and obligatory for execution.
Stage 1: Plywood Preparation
First of all, you need to take 2 plywood sheets and make tags on them according to sizefurniture base, adding 4 cm on each side. It is necessary to cut it out using an electric jigsaw. After that, treat each sheet with bitumen mastic and leave to dry.
The next thing you need to do is to cover the plywood sheets from all sides with moisture-proof impregnation, which is intended for processing wooden surfaces. This must be done in order that during operation of the tabletop water could not provoke the process of its separation and rotting.
Stage 2: Plywood Mounting
Attach the first sheet of plywood to the furniture base with self-tapping screws. But first make markup on it to fix this element correctly and without distortions. After that, pay attention to the strength of the structure. If it is mobile, shaky, then it will be necessary to make its additional fixation.
Apply glue to the fixed plywood board.It is necessary to do this with zigzag movements across its surface. Then put a second plywood board on it and press it as much as possible, and then fix the sheets with self-tapping screws.
Stage 3: Mesh and Ribbon Mount
Next, take the paint grid and attach it with a stapler to the topthe outer side of the plywood construction. At the same time, the pitch of its cell must not exceed 20 mm. Fix the mesh is best on the side edges of the plywood. Be sure to keep it as tight as possible and not sag.
Now take a masking tape and grease it with a thin layer of tile adhesive. Fix it all over the plywood edge and leave to dry completely. Next, take the liquid glass and brush. Treat this component to the entire edge of the plywood, and the surface of the double-layer table top with a waterproofing compound.
Stage 4: Creating a Contact Layer
To make a high-quality veneer, it is necessary to provide a contact layer between plywood and tile. This will require the use of a cement layer. It is created as follows:
- Set the beacons for the cement cushion around the perimeter of the edge (1-1.5 cm), securing them with self-tapping screws.
- Make a cement mix mortar, add a small amount of latex to it and apply on the plywood surface, paying attention to the level of the beacons, since the height of the finished contact layer should not exceed 1.5 cm.
- Level the surface of the screed using a level, then remove the beacons and leave the contact layer to dry for 2 days.
Stage 5: facing the tabletop
Before you start facing the tabletop, you need to cover it with a primer and wait until it is completely dry. Then dilute the tile adhesive according to the instructions. Be sure to add to it an additional primer in the ratio of 3: 1, and then take the first tile and grease it with a spatula with the finished compound. Spread it on the countertop should be at a right angle. Then take the next onetile, apply glue to it and lay next to the previous finishing material. Be sure to use crosses in the course of this - they will make the seams between the tiles smooth. In this way, the entire surface of the table top is covered, and with the help of small pieces of tile, its sides are faced.
The last thing to do is wipe the seams.To do this, use a composition that includes epoxy resin. Remove any residues with a damp sponge. When the finished tabletop is completely dry, it will need to be thoroughly washed.
After that, you can use the table top.
