Passports, insurance documents, driving licenses, bank statements — the list of paper work and life admin we are likely to have lying around the house could go on and on.

So, why don't we toss what we can to get out from underneath all that paper? These are the things you can shred right now that you may not have realized ... and the things you can't.

1. Bank statements

These can be discarded after one year and shredding means that your banking and personal details won't be on show to be copied. Better still, opt for paperless statements. That way you can check them via online banking anytime (and print out only if you need to).

2. Bills

These can also to be destroyed after a year. Most utility and telecoms providers offer online-only billing too but don't do this with all your accounts as a hard copy of a utility bill is often requested as proof of address. Online statements don't count.

3. Payslips

These are part of the year club too or, if it comes sooner, when your next W2 arrives.

4. Insurance policy documents

It's always wise to keep a hard copy of your certificates but most insurance policy details can be accessed via the insurer's website (using your account details). Next time you renew, ask about this. You can also take images on your phone of all the important bits and store them digitally — so you can access the details anytime, anyplace.

Documents you need to keep:

  • Birth, marriage, divorce and death certificates
  • ID cards and passports
  • Insurance certificates
  • Exam result/qualification certificates
  • Pension documents
  • Mortgage documents
  • Any dealing with the IRS

"Before you destroy documents, think carefully about whether you might need them as evidence down the line. With the recent spate of payment protection and credit card protection insurance claims, it's been easier and quicker for those with clear documentation to prove their case," says Caroline Bloor, GH's consumer director.
