    What is a phrase?

    The word phrase comes from the German or French phrase and means complete thought. The phrase, as part of speech, is the largest phonetic unit in the Russian language.

    Below are the main features of the phrase and examples of speech.

    Signs of the phrase

    The words “phrase” and “sentence” are synonymous, and often people think that a sentence and a phrase are one and the same. However, it is worth noting that the phrase is not always a sentence, that is, the sentence may contain several phrases, and the phrase contains several sentences. In order to understand what a phrase is, you should define several of its features:

    • semantic completeness;
    • intonational completeness;
    • syntactic connectedness of words.

    Examples of use in speech

    In each language there are “common phrases” that are commonly spoken in a given situation or that are dictated by the rules of etiquette. Typically, such phrases do not carry a special meaning, however, they are important for maintaining speech communication. Examples of such phrases: good morning, good night, nice to meet you, with light steam, something like that.

    In order to make your speech more attractive, you can use the so-called "loud phrases" or "catch phrase" (aphorisms). These include short sayings of famous people or quotations from works, they often become proverbs. For example: "a car is not a luxury, but a means of transportation," "appetite comes with eating."

    There are also stable phrases, or idioms. They may not be consistent with the grammatical norms of the language, and some of them may seem difficult to understand.
